BVI Dinghy Regatta
Tortola

The second annual Sunny Caribbee BVI Dinghy Championships, held May 10 and 11, in Road Harbour, Tortola broke records, beating 2002's entries by 4 boats with a total of 56 entries.
Seven, one design classes made up the fleet, all racing in the same area, around 3 different courses. The Race Committee headed by Mr. Arlen Wheeler from St Croix were kept very busy with their RC boat sitting in the middle of a start and a finish line running multiple sequences for dinghy sailors ages 8 to nearly 60.

After a packed Skippers Meeting on Saturday morning, competitors crowded the BVI Watersports Centre's beach, rigging in anticipation of 15 knot breezes. All 56 boats launched from the beach on Road Reef, reaching out to the start line with the youngest division's class flag being hoisted first. A spectacular sight as Optimists, Lasers (representing all 3 sized rigs), Wayfarers and Picos sailed the line gradually splitting off as they headed up their first beat of the day.

The younger the sailor, the shorter the course. Some racing marks were being used by the entire fleet, but thanks to excellent timing from the Race Committee and the skill and attitude of the competitors, not one protest was lodged all weekend.

Sunday saw a couple of small squalls making conditions variable, from very light to 20 knot gusts creating several capsizes especially in the Wayfarer fleet.

The prize giving held in a packed clubhouse, was conducted by the RBVIYC 'Captain of Sailing' Joe Standish. He awarded beautiful prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places in each class, courtesy of Sunny Caribbee. A special mention from the Race Committee was given to the entire Wayfarer fleet congratulating them on their sportsmanship. Julie Standish was awarded the Latitude 18 prize for the lady within the Wayfarer fleet that had been 'dunked' the most!
