America's Cup

Loïck Peyron and Bertrand Pacé launch Team France campaign For America's Cup 2007. Team France will be a French team calling upon international skills where they are complimentary.
A project which has become obvious for these two men who have known each other for 10 years.

A sporting and technical project built around French expertise and savoir-faire, surrounded by the best internationals in the field.

A multi-activity sporting programme and communications operations lasting for four years.

A total budget of 75 million euros, 50% of which must be guaranteed before the end of July 2003 to be sure of putting together a winning project.

Ernesto BERTARELI (Alinghi, winner of the last America's Cup)
"Loïck has always impressed me by his determination and racing intuition. He is an extraordinary and intelligent sailor, who knows how to lead his team to victory. In teaming up with Bertrand Pacé, a match-racing specialist, Loïck is demonstrating his team spirit once again and will certainly be a formidable candidate for the next edition of the America's Cup. I wish them every success in putting together a team which matches their ambition."

A project which has become obvious for these two men who have known each other for 10 years

Trophées Clairefontaine, Multihull Grand Prix ... Loïck and Bertrand have been rubbing shoulders out on the water for ten years. And although match-racing and the America's Cup have become part of Bertrand's every day life, Loïck has been interested in the famous silver trophy for almost ten years. All of these centres of interest buzz around in their heads : architectural thoughts, technological research, human resources and team management, sporting challenge and the international dimension of the event. A project in common became obvious and both sailors, each with an exceptional list of achievements, thrashed their ideas out properly last December in Auckland. An association which can be qualified as natural, complementary and unifying.

Why together?

Loïck PEYRON: "For me, Bertrand is one of the figures of the America's Cup. He knows the competition and its hidden side and possess the famous international experience which is so rare for we French. He really knows what it means to manage a sporting project of this scale. What's more, he has taken part in various sort of organisations and knows their strengths and weaknesses. He's been through a lot and now has his fair share of grey hair to prove it ! I'm not doing this without Bertrand... "

Highlights : 36 Atlantic crossing 15 of which single-handed, two circumnavigations (Vendée Globe and The Race), 4 ORMA world championship titles, 2 consecutive wins on the English Transatlantic single-handed yacht race, 4 Round Europe Yacht Race wins, 14 first and 4 second places in the 21 ORMA Multihull Grands Prix between 1993 and 2002...

Bertrand PACE: "I've always had an enormous amount of esteem and respect for Loïck. What I like about him is that he is passionate about yacht racing. He doesn't think twice before bringing himself into question and sails on all sorts of boats. His boats have always been technically innovative and high performance machines. Loïck has enormous talent in terms of technology and when it comes to navigation. He has both the savoir-faire and the energy to manage an America's Cup team. We are both passionate about sailing and love being out on the water. That should not be forgotten!"/images/content/images/bertrandpace.jpg>

Mixture of cultures

Bringing talent together by building a team around a solid core. That is what Team France's philosophy is all about. Priority is given to group cohesion where individual skills will be used for the common good. Bertrand PACE: "I love my country and I know that France does possess the human and technological resources required to build a winning structure". Team France will therefore be a French team calling upon international skills where they are complementary.

Key Men

So that we can have all the necessary assets on our side, PACE explains that "we have to start acquiring key people right now". S strong relations are maintained with national and international skills in setting up the Design Team. For several months now, we have been in contact with two American "personalities". Rod DAVIS(Coach, 9 America's Cup participations, 2 times Olympic medallist in the Los Angeles (gold) and Barcelona (silver) Games, 14 international match-racing titles...) and Clay OLIVER (naval architect, Team New Zealand, Stars and Stripes, America3...).

With a view to mixing skill and experience, Christian CONTZEN, former Managing Director of Renault F1 (6 times World Champion) and highly enthusiastic about our project will be in charge of technological partnerships.

Top French educational institutions have already given their undertaking in the shape of ParisTech.

Highlights : ParisTech includes ten of the most prestigious French engineering colleges (Ponts et Chaussées, ENSTA, Mines, Polytechnique, Télécom Paris, ...). ParisTech covers the whole of the scientific and technical fields, representing a centre for excellence on an equal footing with the world's best universities.

Time is limited...

"In spite of strong outside enticement, some of these French and international skills have decided to suspend their decisions momentarily." stated Bertrand PACE. "In concrete terms, these people would like to be part of our history and our initiative. They trust us and are very enthusiastic indeed."

"It is also absolutely essential that we acquire top quality equipment rapidly to get started and to gain time in our sporting and technical development. Offers have already been put to us."
concluded Loïck PEYRON.

A multi-activity sporting programme and communications operations lasting for four years

Any successful sporting preparation must call upon and be carried out across a range of media. The four-year long sporting programme will be set up in such a way as to enable a structure comprising 34 sailing members to acquire experience whilst managing priorities in a calm manner. "They need to be have competition and keep an open mind in order to avoid becoming saturated, a common phenomenon in IACC campaigns." explains Bertrand PACE.

Physical training for Team France will also come about in competing against the best across the different series and in gaining as much experience as possible. The international match-racing circuit, Volvo Ocean Race, record attempts, multihulls, international one design series. "You have to know how to manage the strong and weaker moments, making the most of the latter to sail on other boats. That's where the richness of the experience comes into it. The last eighteen months will be given over to exclusively to the ACC." ends Bertrand PACE.

First rendez-vous

The World Series taking place in San-Francisco in October 2003 are part of Team France's sports calendar. As the first event after the America's Cup, several people have already been contacted in order to have Team France take part. It will be the project's first communications operation to announce a partnership.

A total budget of 75 million euros 50% of which must be guaranteed before the end of July 2003 to be sure of putting together a winning project

"Money alone is not enough to win, but you cannot win without money"

Therefore, in order to get down to work rapidly and efficiently, the best men and tools of the moment have to be brought in. So, our aim is to put together 75 million euros (average of the true budgets in the last edition) with the guarantee of obtaining the first half of the budget before the end of July 2003.

Why 50% by the end of July 2003?

To reinforce and bring together the key people available on the marker and who are waiting to make their decision
To guarantee obtaining the best equipment at the outset
To get the sporting programme underway
To offer our partners an exceptional means of communication depending upon Team France's values
