The 2008 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship promises to leave a lasting legacy for sailing in Denmark thanks to the support of the city of Århus and the other key partners of this year's championship.
Volvo continues its support of international youth sailing as title sponsor of the championship for the ninth time, highlighting the achievements of the next generation of sailing stars. Many of the sport's biggest names, whether they are Olympic medallists, America's Cup winners or Volvo Ocean Race veterans, first made their mark at the Youth Worlds.
As the world's leading showcase for young sailing talent and the most prestigious event in the youth sailing calendar, the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship provides a fantastic opportunity to promote and develop sailing, particularly in and around the venue. This year, the backing of the city of Århus and the other suppliers and supporters of 2008 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is set to leave a lasting legacy in Denmark.
Århus, Denmark's second largest city, is located on eastern side of the Jutland peninsula. It combines history, having been originally settled by the Vikings during the eighth century, with a thriving contemporary culture driven by a wealth of educational institutions. Denmark will host the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship for the first time in 2008 and the city of Århus is throwing its full support behind the event. The city has plenty of experience hosting and promoting major sporting events, including the World Gymnastic Championships in 2006. This year's Youth Worlds has already been declared an 'Official City Event' and the Opening Ceremony will be hosted at the City Hall.
Finn LYCK, Event Manager of Sport Aarhus Events, said the city can't wait for the championship to get underway, "Sailing has always been one of the central sports in Århus and we're delighted to be hosting such a prestigious event as the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship. We're looking forward to welcoming the world's best young sailors to the city and I'm certain they will enjoy the excellent sailing facilities and conditions we have here. We'll put all of our efforts into ensuring this is one of the biggest, best and most successful Youth Worlds ever."
Another big supporter of this year's event is Danish shipping company TORM. TORM is one of the main sponsors of the Danish Sailing Association and is demonstrating its support of youth sailing by introducing additional programmes focussed at maximising the legacy from the 2008 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship. As well as sponsoring this year's championship, TORM has also donated half a million Danish Kroner (approximately 65,000 Euro) to a fund to assist Danish sailing clubs purchase boats used during the Youth Worlds once the championship is over. The scheme, run by the Danish Sailing Association, will mean clubs will be able to purchase Youth Worlds' boats at approximately 30-40% below the normal market price.
Dan IBSEN, Secretary General of the Danish Sailing Association, said the Youth Worlds is a great opportunity to develop the sport in Denmark. "The 2008 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is a fantastic opportunity to showcase to the world the fantastic sailing venues, facilities and organization we have here in Denmark. Over the years Denmark has produced some of true legends of the sailing world, and the Youth Worlds is not just a chance to take a look at our latest up and coming stars, but also a springboard to further develop sailing around the country. With the support of TORM this year, we are able to provide clubs around the country an outstanding offer to build on the legacy of this year's championship,"
Other top level sponsors of this year's championship are CODAN, one of the largest insurance companies in Denmark well known to the nation's sailing clubs for over 15 years, and Schenker, one the world's leading providers of integrated logistics who will be responsible for the transport of all boats for the championship. The boats for the seven events at this year's championship will be provided by: Sirena Voile in cooperation with the Danish distributor Børresen Boats (SL 16 multihull); Performance Sailcraft (Laser and Laser Radial); Ovington Boats in cooperation with Børresen Boats (29er); and NeilPryde International in cooperation with NeilPryde Scandinavia A/S (RS:X).
