Phil ROBERTSON and his crew of Harry THURSTON and Scott MORRISON won a nail-biting final series to take the title at the ISAF Grade 3 Youth Match Racing Championships in Auckland.
(NZL) took victory after a final that went all the way to the fifth and deciding race on the Auckland Harbour on Sunday afternoon, beating local favourite James WILLIAMSON
ROBERTSON won the first race, WILLLIAMSON the second, ROBERTSON the third, WILLIAMSON the fourth, and finally ROBERTSON the fifth and final race to win The National Bank International Youth Match Racing Championships 2008 for the second year in a row!
This morning's semi-finals series started after a slight delay this morning. ROBERTSON chose to race Jamie WOODS
(AUS), who qualified fourth from the round robins.
WOODS beat ROBERTSON in the first race by 6 seconds and it was ROBERTSON left to win the next two races in a row if he was going to make the finals. ROBERTSON won the second race by 30 seconds but the third race was not going in his favour until 20 seconds from the finish line, ROBERTSON came from behind and rolled over WOODS to take the win!
In the other semi-final, team mates WILLIAMSON and Reuben CORBETT
(NZL) were left to race each other.
WILLIAMSON won the first race by 6 seconds and after gaining a penalty on CORBETT in the pre-start he went onto win the second race and secure his finals spot.
In the petit-final, CORBETT beat WOODS 2-0.
