With 12 races scheduled, racing got underway last Sunday , 4 September, concluding yesterday after 11 races. Attracting 28 sailors from 8 nations, racing was tight throughout.
Shen XIAOYING (CHN) got off to a flying start, placing a 2,1 in the opening day, with her main advesary Lu LIANHUA (CHN) snapping at her heels throughout. The performance of XIAOYING was to be expected as she represented China at the 2004 Olympic Games finishing 7, with 6 top 10 bullets. Throughout the World Championship series a close battle saw these two fighting for the gold slot on the podium, to finish only a point apart.
Another Olympian joining XIAOYING in China were Maria Tania CALLES (MEX) who finished twelth in Athens. Whilst CALLES has switched to the Laser Radial and currently sits at 14 on the ISAF World Sailing Rankings. CALLES's form was excellent, and her podium position would have been much higher, but lack of consistency was her downfall with two double-digit finishes.
