Argentina won both the open and women's events at the ISAF Nations Cup Regional Final for South America to add its name to the list of countries set to battle for the ISAF Nations Cup Trophy in Brazil this March.
Juan FIGUEROA (ARG) in the open event, and Cecilia RUIZ BARLETT (ARG) in the women's event, qualified for the ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final to be held at Porto Alegre, Brazil from 23-28 March 2009.

They fought against teams from Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay. Brazil was not there because they have already qualified for the Grand Final the host nation.

FIGUREOA first had to face Juan GRIMALDI (ARG) in the Argentina National Qualifier. GRIMALDI represented South America in the last Nations Cup after beating Daniel GLOMB of Brazil in the Regional Final, but this time round it was FIGUREOA who came out on top.

FIGUEROA then moved to the Regional Final as the Argentinean representative. He progressed smoothly through two round robins and onto the final, where he won 3-0 against the HERMAN family team from Chile skippered by Pablo HERMAN (CHI). Although the 3-0 scoreline was emphatic, the result didn't reflect the intensity of the races, which were very hard fought in strong winds.

In the women's event, RUIZ BARLETT didn't have any rivals, so a challenge was organized between her team and that Carlos SCHAUMAN from Paraguay (fourth behind Argentina, Chile and Uruguay in the open category). In light winds, RUIZ BARLETT scored a confidence boosting victory, by winning the challenge 3-2.
