The young Hawaiian Shark KAHN (USA), raced like he had a toothache, managing his regatta worst 17th place. However he still retains second place behind series leader, sail maker Judd SMITH (USA). Miami sailor Tito GONZALES (USA) sailing a consistent series is just three points ahead of Australian Iain MURRAY.

From the start over near the Berkeley shore, the windward leeward course headed south west in line with the North pylon of the Golden Gate Bridge. The wind was ten knots but built to 17 knots over the course of the two hour race.

Dennis CONNER (USA) started down near the pin and was one of the first out of the left hand corner. San Francisco Yacht Club's HEALY started a quarter ways up from the left in a nice gap. With clean air HEALY was able to sail his own race, he worked shifts for some big gains on the left and rounded 18 second ahead of CONNER. GONZALES was third with Bermudian Tim PATTON fourth.

The right hand corner punished SMITH, who rounded another eleven places back and series second placed KAHN was buried at 25th.

Canadian Hank LAMMENS had the worst rounding, coming in on port, he was driven into the mark and he watched almost a dozen boats sail through, while he extracted his boat and did his penalty turn.

By the bottom of the first run HEALY was ten boat lengths clear of CONNER and then there was another ten boat lengths to the next bunch including PATTON, GONZALES and MURRAY, the 1984 Etchells World Champion.

On the second beat the leading group stayed left, with HEALY covering CONNER, behind them SMITH banged the right hand corner. When the leaders came back to the starboard lay line, HEALY had extended but GONZALES and MURRAY had closed up on CONNER. Behind them SMITH rounded sixth, a nine place gain on the beat.

Down the run for the third time MURRAY passed GONZALES and on the final beat, the Australian stayed left of CONNER and picked a shift perfectly to climb into second place behind HEALEY. CONNER was third, then GONZALES, Russ SILVESTRI and SMITH.

HEALY commented, 'After our first race OCS, we've been very shy all week, that produced our 25 yesterday, Today we had clear air off the line and we went left. We were expecting a very tough day. It was raining on Mount Tam and in San Raphael this morning, so we thought it was going to be difficult to read, but it actually was a very straight forward sailing day.'

Two more races remain with one each today and tomorrow.
