The Pirates of the Caribbean are:
'For this campaign, it was important to start with an experienced group,' said CAYARD. 'We are the last team to hit the water so we don't have a lot of time to train. We will be counting on experience to help make up ground on all the other teams,'
Cumulatively, The Pirates of the Caribbean have enjoyed the kind of success that is rare in the Volvo Ocean Race. That success includes twelve campaigns between them and four wins (CAYARD, BLEWETT, DE RIDDER and CLOUGHER). Additionally, ARDERN is a veteran who has also participated three times.
Furthermore, the team has participated in 20 editions of the America's Cup and won three (BLEWETT, ARDERN and KIRBY), as well as three Louis Vuitton Cup wins. CAYARD and KIRBY, both of the USA, have each participated five times in the America's Cup.
The eleven Pirates of the Caribbean team members have also taken part in six Olympic Games in different classes, including a bronze medal win for LÖÖF, at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games in the Finn class.
Some of the crew will be rotating: ARDERN and BLEWETT will be racing three legs (Vigo, Spain to Cape Town, South Africa; Cape Town to Melbourne, Australia and; Melbourne to Rio, Brazil) as they have a previous commitment with Alinghi (SUI) in the America's Cup. BLEWETT will be replaced by KIRBY. The replacement for ARDERN has not been finalized yet. Also, Nick MOLONEY is coaching the team and will act as backup navigator.
The entry of The Black Pearl is part of a unique marketing alliance between The Walt Disney Company and Volvo Ocean Race supporting the July 2006 feature film release of Walt Disney Pictures'/Jerry Bruckheimer Films' Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
