ISAF Match Racing World Championship 2005
Calpe, Spain

When the competition gets underway at the ISAF Match Racing World Championship in Calpe, Spain on Tuesday 13 September the twelve competitors will be relying on the expertise of the race officials team to ensure a level playing field. An experienced team lead by Chief Umpire Gerard BOSSE (FRA), a veteran of previous Worlds and America's Cups, will ensure fair play on the Calpe waters.
ISAF appoints the International Umpire Team for the ISAF Match Racing World Championship, which consists of eight ISAF International Umpires (IU) and two National Umpires (NU), who have been invited by the Organizing Authority, Real Club Náutico de Calpe. After registration and training on 12 September, the first skippers' briefing at 1930 hours local time will be followed by a meeting between the skippers and Umpires at 2000 before the Opening Ceremony.

Gerard BOSSE (FRA) leads the International Umpire Team as the Chief Umpire. A former Laser sailor, Gerard has acted as an official at match racing's biggest dates over a long and distinguished career as a race official. Gerard became an ISAF International Judge (IJ) in 1988 and an IU in 1990 and has been a consistent presence at the top of his profession. He was in Auckland, New Zealand for the 2003 America's Cup and earlier in that year he was in Riva del Garda, Italy for the ISAF Match Racing World Championship. He returned to officiate at the Worlds last year in Ekaterinburg, Russia and this year has been Chief Umpire at the ISAF Grade 1 Trofeo Challenge Roberto Trombini and ISAF Grade 1 Congressional Cup.

Gerard will be joined by the following seven IUs:

Luca BABINI (ITA) - Luca became an IU last year and has been busy since. This year acting as a race official at the Trofeo Challenge Roberto Trombini, ISAF Grade 1 Toscana Elba Cup and most recently at the ISAF Grade 1 St. Moritz Match Race.

Wayne BOBERG (NZL) - An ISAF Race Official since 1998, Wayne has considerable experience as an IU, officiating at Worlds, including the 470 Worlds in 1999 and the ISAF Women's Match Racing Worlds the following year. As well as numerous appearances at major match racing regattas, including the St. Moritz Match Race this year, Wayne's portfolio also includes time at the Louis Vuitton Challenger Series and umpiring at the ISAF Team Worlds in 2003.

Philippe GOMEZ (FRA) - Philippe is one of the most experienced umpires at this year's ISAF Worlds, having become an IU in 1995 and most recently this year was appointed by ISAF for the ISAF Grade 1 Match Race Germany.

Manuel HUENSCH (GER) - A former 470 sailor, Manuel has been an ISAF Race Official since 1999 and officiated at the 49er Worlds, as well as this year being on the Umpire Team at the ISAF Grade 1 Albaria Cento Cup in Italy.

Ewan MCEWAN (GBR) - Ewan knows the waters of Calpe well after appearing there at the ISAF Women's Match Racing Worlds in 2002 and as Chief Umpire at this year's ISAF Grade 1 Women Match Race Criterium at the end of April. He has also officiated at the ISAF Match Racing Worlds in Stockholm, Sweden in 2002.

Chris SIMON (GBR) - Chris adds his many years of officials' experience to the considerable pool already present in the International Umpire Team. Now in his tenth year as an IJ and his eleventh as an IU he has umpired at the Louis Vuitton Cup, ISAF Nations Cup and numerous World and Continental titles.

John STANDLEY (AUS) - An IU since 1996, John is another member of the Umpire Team with a heavy weight of experience behind him, which includes umpiring at the 2003 America's Cup. This year he has already appeared at three ISAF Grade 1 events, including positions as Chief Umpire at both the Toscana Elba Cup and Match Race Germany.

The International Umpire Team also includes two officials invited by the Real Club Náutico de Calpe:

David MARIA GOSALBEZ (ESP) - Approved as an IJ last year, David has officiated at the ISAF Grade 2 Princess Sofia Trophy and the 420 Worlds as well as numerous other events. He also has experience in Calpe at the Women Match Race Criterium.

Maria TORRIJO MOLL (ESP) - Maria is also now an IJ after being approved by the Race Officials Committee last year. A former sailor in the Optimist, Vaurien and Europe she has been on the Jury at the OK Dinghy Worlds. She was also Second Race Officer for the 470s at the 2003 ISAF World Sailing Championship in Cadiz and like David has previously umpired at the Women Match Race Criterium in Calpe.

With representatives from seven nations and a vast pool of experience between them the competitors in Calpe can be certain of one thing next week - consistent and fair decisions on the water.
