Bermuda Gold Cup
Hamilton

Two Bermudian skippers yesterday ousted two of the eight seeded skippers in Round One of the Bermuda Gold Cup in a shifty, breezy day of closely-fought matches.
In the "first to three" elimination round, two of the three local skippers competing in this Grade 1 stop on the Swedish Match Tour, Peter Bromby/Team ACE and Paula Lewin/Team ACE, eliminated Bjorn Hansen and Lars Nordbjerg (Denmark), respectively, in a five-match test.

Jes Gram-Hansen/Team Victory Lane (DEN), ranked First on the Swedish Match Tour and second in the ISAF Match Racing Rankings, came close to going home with one day of racing when Mason Woodworth (USA), one of the new and talented amateur match racers, took him to five matches. "Mason sailed really well today in tricky conditions," said Gram-Hansen. Gram-Hansen advances to the quarter-finals on Friday against Lewin. The final match-up in this group saw Sweden's Mikael Lindqvist take Andy Horton of the U.S. in three straight races.

In Group 2, three matches were completed and all eight skippers are still in the hunt to advance. Jesper Radich/ Team Radich (DEN) is leading Tucker Thompson/T2 Productions (USA); Staffan Lindberg/Team Musto (FIN) also has two wins to Glenn Astwood of Bermuda; Karol Jablonski/Team MK Café (POL) is holding on two wins over Chris Law/ "The Outlaws" (GBR) while Mattias Rahm/Team Stena Bulk (SWE) is leading fellow Swede Marie Bjorling.

The remaining matches in group 2 will be sailed this morning, from which the last of the quarter finalists will be selected. In the afternoon, a Pro-Am Regatta will take place with sponsors' representatives joining the seeded skippers for an afternoon of fleet racing.

The winner of the Bermuda Gold Cup will receive the King Edward VII Trophy, a share of the $65,000 prize purse and valuable points on the Swedish Match Tour.
