Even though he didn't break the race record, Frank Pong will be happy that "Jelik" has finally claimed not only line honours, but the Hainan race title on corrected time.
Finishing a massive 8 hours ahead of Sam Chan's "Ffree Fire", and over two hours on corrected time ahead of Fred Kinmonth's "Stella", Jelik appeared to sneak across the finish line ahead of the drop in wind speed which dogged the other competitors from early this morning.
In the absence of Siren, Stella claimed second place on corrected time with Marcel Leid's "Elektra" in third. Full details of Siren's rig failure have now emerged. The Sayer 13 broke a stay at 2130hrs last night, resulting in the rig dropping overboard.
The crew had no option but to cut the rig loose and, although they suffered more complications when it caught on the keel, they managed to free themselves and motor to Sanya. All of the crew are unharmed, although bitterly disappointed at having to abandon the race when 22nm ahead of arch-rival Stella.
HKPN competitors Dolphin VI and Baringo are still out on the water, but expected to finish by midnight tonight, allowing Race Officer Y.K. Szeto to enjoy a well earned beer!
