ASSA ABLOY Consolidates Lead

Amer Sports One

Volvo Ocean Race

The New Year hasn’t welcomed the crew with its most pleasant side. The wind is around 30 knots and the boats are all jib top reaching which provides for the wettest sailing possible.
On top of it, the wind speed and direction changes continuously, forcing the crews to change the sails accordingly.

ASSA ABLOY has eased the sheets slightly over the last hours, picked up some speed and positioned herself 65 miles in front of Amer Sports One's bow. News Corp, Tyco and illbruck look like tied to each other. Ross Field is happy about this fact as it gives them the best "sail testing" and "speed development program" available for a sailing yacht. Djuice stays in the south as her crew hopes for a large windless spot for the leaders where they can sail around. Amer Sports Too is heading further to the north in expectance of the next wind shift.

The general weather situation at 0400 on 1 January is:
Anticylone 1018 mb centred near North Cape New Zealand, slow moving. Low 988mb moving east just south of Tasmania. Shallow low slow moving between Sydney and Brisbane. Wind NNW 25 perhaps 30kt. Slowly easing North 20, again 25-30 later at 165E. Winds ease towards North Cape, North 15-20 by 168E and North-NE05-10 at North Cape. Seas 3.5 metres, (Rough) at 165E. Easing 1.5-2.0 towards North Cape, (N'ly swell). Weather A few showers, later rain to the west of this route. Becoming fine North Cape.Moderate or poor visibility with risk mist or fog at first. Becoming good towards North Cape.
