Sopot Match Race 2005
Sopot, Poland

Ian WILLIAMS (GBR) tops the ISAF Grade 1 Sopot Match Race leaderboard in Poland after an impressive first day display. The Brit won six of seven matches, although is yet to face Russia's Andrew ARBUZOV, who opened his challenge with four straight wins.
WILLIAMS's only loss came in his match with fellow top ten sailor in the ISAF World Match Race Rankings Eugeniy NEUGODNIKOV (RUS), both of whom will also be competing at the upcoming ISAF Match Racing World Championship in Calpe, Spain from 12-17 September. The two recently met in the final of the ISAF Grade 1 Internationaux de France de Match Racing in Pornichet, France at the beginning of August where WILLIAMS scored a 3-0 whitewash. NEUGODNIKOV got his revenge with victory yesterday, although the Russian had a somewhat mixed day with loses to both Germany's Stefan MEISTER and fellow Russian ARBUZOV.

For World number 29, MEISTER it was a successful day with his win against NEUGODNIKOV one of four victories against three losses. The German lies third overall, but with the competitors having competed in varying numbers of matches the leaderboard looks set to change dramatically at the end of today.

Amongst the remaining competitors, Przemek TARNACKI (POL) took advantage of the home support with just one loss to WILLIAMS counting against victories over Laurie JURY (NZL), Marek STANCZYK (POL) and Philipp KADELBACH (GER).

Racing in Sopot continues with the round robin today before, with the event set to come to a conclusion on Sunday.
