UBS Challenge Match Race
Newport, Rhode Island

Former America's Cup contender and match-racing champion Chris Law comes out of retirement to defeat world-class sailors.
Yesterday, The Outlaws, skippered by Chris Law of Great Britain, won the UBS Challenge Finals after enduring five grueling days of competition against the world's best sailors. The team, which includes Americans Tucker Thompson and Dobbs Davis, both of Annapolis, Md., and Canadian Jeff Brock of Nova Scotia, will take home the top share of the competition's $100,000 purse, one of the largest in sailing.

"It seemed as though I came to the natural end of may career, but I missed the special things this sport offers, especially the competition and camaraderie, so I started racing again," said Chris Law. "Just when I thought things couldn't get any better, I found myself here in Newport - my life at the moment is just charmed."

He added, "The America's cup contenders had pressure on them to win this regatta, but we took things in stride and found ourselves in a win-win situation."

To capture a $35,000 prize, the Outlaws defeated Ed Baird's Team Musto 2-1 in a best-of-three knockout series. To advance to the Finals round, Law's crew won its Semi-Final race against Team Mascalzone Latino, skippered by Paolo Cian. In the Petit Finals, Peter Gilmour of OneWorld Challenge beat Cian to finish in third place.

Race commentator Peter Montgomery said, "Throughout the three races, both Law and Baird were very aggressive. Ed Baird got the best of the start and took the lead for most of the first lap, but an early spinnaker hoist by Law allowed the Outlaws to attack Team Musto and pass them on the down-wind side - a move which proved critical in the final outcome."

"You have to appreciate the irony - Chris Law come out of retirement to unexpectedly beat America's Cup contenders," said Martha Parker, race commentator and avid sailor. "Law is a real cowboy, and today, his aggressive and gutsy tactics paid off."
