KRÖGER Moves Clear

2.4 Metre World Championship 2005

Marciana Marina, Elba Island, Italy

After the fresh north westerly wind building up to 15 knots that on Wednesday allowed the 90 competitors at the 2.4 Metre World Championship in Marciana Marina, Elba Island, Italy to sail three races, yesterday after a delayed start another two races were added. Runner up at the recent IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championship in the 2.4 Metre, Heiko KRÖGER (GER) scored his second bullet of the Championship to claim a ten point overall lead.

Over fours hours after the 1200 hours local time scheduled start time, the first gun was fired to begin race four of the series. A six to nine knot northwesterly breeze blew over the race area right in front of the Circolo della Vela Marciana Marina hosting the event.

First to cross the finishing line were KRÖGER and Nick SCANDONE (USA), two of the 35 disabled sailors competing at the Worlds, who are both coming off the back of strong performances in the 2.4 Metre at the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championship held in Denmark at the beginning of the month.

SCANDONE scored his first bullet of the Championship in race five, coming in ahead of Britain's Michael COGSWELL, with KRÖGER taking third.

After five races KRÖGER holds a ten point lead after discarding his black flag result in race one. SCANDONE lies second on 17 points, two ahead of bronze medallist at the Paralympics and the IFDS Worlds Thierry SCHMITTER (NED). Sweden's Stellan BERLIN is fourth on 25 points, with Helena LUCAS (GBR) the top women in fifth.

Today three more races are scheduled starting from 1200.
