Top Cat European Championship
Cesenatico

One day before the end of the XVII Top Cat European Championship in Cesenatico, Italian Egidio and Giulia Babbi have conquest the European title in K2 (17') winning all the 6 races.

As the regatta rules include 2 discards, tomorrow they can choose not to race, if they want. "We have been fastest than our challengers", says the Italian champion. "We have been trained for the last two months, - says his daughter Giulia, bowman, 11 years old - I was worried by our opponents until the end of the second race today, but now I'm absolutely happy. My next race? I'd like to sail in Melges 24".

Nobody could stop their run to the title: neither the Italian Daniele Saragoni and Agostino Montalti nor the other Italian Maurizio and Giulia Saragoni, respectively 2nd and 3rd at the moment.

Most of these Italian sailors are specialist of catamaran since many years. Egidio Babbi has been twice Class A World Champion; Agostino Montalti in 2001 has conquered the Top Cat World Championship in Dubai (Emirates) in couple with Alberto Babbi, who is competing here in K1 (18') with Achille Pazzaglia (they're actually 4th).

Today the crews have run two beautiful races with 12/15 knots from South/South-East.

In K1 are leading the English Simon White and David Holligan (2-2-1-1-1-1 their results); they precede two German couples: SebastianMoser/Alexander Moser (1-1-8-4-2-4) and Normann Strack/Manfred Haselbeck (4-4-2-3-7-2).

In K2 (as written) double winning for the Babbi's, while the Italian Daniele Saragoni/Agostino Montalti (2-2-4-2-2-2) are 2nd and Italian again Maurizio Saragoni/Giulia Saragoni are 3rd (5-9-5-4-3-3).

In K3 the leader is the German Eric Brandstetter (OCS-1-1-1-1-1) before the Austrian Franz Lang (1-3-3-2-5-5) and the German Olaf Leuschner (6-2-2-4-2-9).

In TC division (F1 and F2) is continuing the leadership of the German Thomas Dietlein (1-2-2-1-1-1) and Peter Grabeldinger (4-DNF-1-2-2-3) who precede the Italian Federico Vegni/Paola Namimato (3-1-4-3-4-2).

The Top Cat European Championship is organised in Cesenatico by Circolo Vela Cesenatico with the Patronage of FIV (Italian Sailing Federation), Gesturist and Municipality of Cesenatico and Cesena. The Championship has the support of Decathlon - chain European leader in the distribution of sportswear and equipment for sport - Adria Bandiere, Metaltecnica, Sicograf and Digital Store.

Tomorrow the final two races will take place starting from 14:00h. In Cesenatico competing 51 German crews, 14 Italians, 10 Austriaan, 7 Polland, 3 French, 2 Slovenians, 1 Swizerland and 1 British team divided into Categorys K1 (26 crews) K2 (34); K3 (20); TC (9).
