Optimist Class World Championships
Corpus Christi

The 2002 ADT Optimist World Sailing Championship competitors came back to the race course to be greeted by light and shifty winds.
After a 2 hour postponement, the racers were back on course for race number 9. In winds from 5-7 knots, the competitors were spread out all over the race course. It was tough to tell who was having a good day, as many sailors were doing so well in the variable winds. Jessie Kirkland from Bermuda was on a roll with a 2, 1, but was OCS in the third race. It was anyone's day today....if you played the right side of the course!

Races 10 and 11 were sailed in 10-12 knots of breeze. Corpus Christi, known for it's BIG wind, has been silent much of this regatta due to the lingering effects of a Tropical Disturbance.

Standings haven't changed much in the top 5, but the top 10 has been shuffled quite considerably. However, look good are Tahiti, Singapore, Croatia, Spain and China who remain at the top with their consistent finishes. Peru and Italy have strong showings as well. Jackson Benvenutti of the USA led most of his flight in the third race, only to be passed on the last leg by Filip Matika, Croatia (the regatta leader), on the last leg, and finished third, his best showing of the regatta.

Lack of wind stopped the Race Committee from running four races today, with only three held, and Friday should bring more wind.
