ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championships
Club Nautico de Calpe, Calpe Bay

The quarter final stages started today, with a severe weather warning.

Day 4 at the ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championships arrived with a sunny morning and light breeze, what happened to the conditions promised by the locals? A postponement of half an hour was signalled and the sailors were released from the dock at 11am. By the time the boats had started out to the racecourse the clouds were building and the breeze was freshening. Luckily the wind was blowing off the shore (at about 10-12 knots) so the sea was pretty flat, ideal conditions though not as warm as yesterday, strange things were afoot in Calpe bay. The plan was to race 3 flights from the places 9-16 round robin (group D) before cracking on with the quarter final round (group C). The Club contacted the local meteorological office to find out what was happening under the evil looking clouds racked up in the mountains. A severe weather warning was the answer that came back; expect thunder, lightning and 40-50 knots of wind. By this time flight 2 of the consolation round had just begun so there was a quick re-think on the plan and after flight 2 had finished, Group C were switched into the boats to get the quarter finals underway before the promised weather arrived. Luckily the 50 knots didn't arrive but the rain did.

The breeze gently decreased until at 5.30 racing was stopped after 5 flights had been completed. All teams have at least one loss and 3 teams are on 2 losses so the final 2 flights will be crucial for the semi final berths, I'm sure that the Match Racing appendix for breaking ties will be getting a hammering later on today. Over night leader is Liz Baylis again on count back from Marie Bjorling.

Today it's looking like a beautiful Mediterranean day, lets hope that it holds. The plan for today is to begin with the 9-16 round before finishing off the quarter final round. Later on it is planned to hold 2 of the semi final fights leaving the remainder of the semis and the finals for Saturday.
