The Olympic Sailing Committee of US Sailing, national governing body for the sport in the US, has announced that Vanguard Sailboats of Portsmouth, R.I., has renewed its sponsorship of the US Sailing Team.
Vanguard's sponsorship, which extends through December, 2005, specifically targets the support of the top-five athletes who will represent the U.S.A. at the Laser Radial World Youth Championships in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Each athlete named to the team will receive a grant to offset expenses associated with attending the championship. In addition, the funding from Vanguard will provide for a coach to accompany the team. For 2002, the athletes attending the world championship will be determined by the Laser Class Grand Prix Ranking System and will not have reached their 19th birthday in 2002. The 2002 Laser Radial World Youth Championship will be held at the Buffalo Canoe Club, in Ontario, Canada, from July 14-19. The 2002 team and coach will be named in May.
"The future of our sport lies in the early identification and development of talented young sailors," said Olympic Sailing Committee Chair Fred Hagedorn, (Chicago, Ill.). "Vanguard's generosity will afford the members of the U.S. Laser Radial World Youth Team an opportunity to excel at what may be their first international event."
"We are pleased to support the US Sailing Team for the next four years," said Vanguard Sailboats' Vice President-Marketing, Susan Daly. "This is a wonderful opportunity for Vanguard to support youth sailing and up and coming Olympians."
