Francisco Saubidet Birkner (ARG) clinched the 2014 Techno 293 South American Championship title with a day to go in Mendoza, Argentina.
Birkner wrapped up the title with a day to spare having recorded ten race victories out of 11. The Argentinean has an unassailable 20 point lead over Lars Van Sommeren (NED) with one race remaining on the final day.
Sommeren's performance over 11 races has guaranteed him silver whilst America's Geronimo Nores has secured bronze.
As a qualify regatta for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games set to be in Nanjing, China this August the stakes and competition has been high yet good natured for the stars of the future.
There will still be many personal battles going on right down the leaderboard where one more race could make a difference. This competition is about far more than the podium places. All the kids are gaining excellent world class competition experience, learning from each other and, as always, making new friends.
Whilst offering Nanjing 2014 places which will be decided on the final day the regatta has been a fabulous training ground for competitors from Aruba, the Netherlands and USA preparing for the Worlds in France and the Youth Olympic Games.
"A 28 hour trip but this place is totally worth it,"
said Lars van Sommeren.
