At the 2002 Olympic Test Event in Athens this summer, over 500 athletes from 40 countries competed from the Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Centre, as well as a vast number of coaches, supporters and other team officials.
As well as testing the race management, conditions and sailing facilities expected at the Olympic Regatta in 2004, waste management and cleaning services were tested with a specific focus on plastic bottles and paper.
Recycling bins for bottles were located in specific places around the Athletes Lounge and marina, whilst paper recycling bins were located around many areas related to competition functions and support.
Approximately six thousand plastic bottles were recycled by athletes, team officials and the regatta workforce with many national delegations declaring that Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Centre is not only a superb athletic venue and Olympic marina, but also a very clean one.
As environmental awareness increases leading up to the Olmpic Games in 2004, it is good to see that all sailors, in keeping with the sports clean image, are setting the pace on such issues.
