Tornado World Championships and Olympic Qualification Regatta
Marthas Vineyard

After abandoning races on Monday due to failing winds, the Tornado World Championships finally got underway yesterday. The day began again with rain but this time with plenty of wind and no thunderstorms.
As the fleet headed out to the race area, the north-north-easterly breeze moderated to a steady 16 knots

57 teams from 20 nations took to the race course to fight it out for the World Champion title and qualify their nation for the 2004 Olympic Regatta in Athens.

In Race 1, the 2000 Olympic gold medallists and ISAF Ranked World number 1, Roman Hagara/Hans-Peter Steinacher (AUT) worked through the fleet quickly and lead to the finish. Defending champions and 2000 Olympic silver medallists, Darren Bundock/John Forbes (AUS) had to settle for second place ahead of 2002 European Champions Olivier Backes/Laurent Voiron (FRA) in third. Fourth place went to Martin Strandberg/Christian Mattson of Sweden and Xavier Revil/Laurent Guillemette (FRA) rounded out the top 5.

At the start of Race 2, the wind had freshened and throughout the race the breeze ranged between 16 - 20 knots. The increase in velocity was enough to let several other top crews show their strengths in this very competitive fleet. Mitch Booth/Herbert Dercksen (NED) led most of the way and took the bullet. Lars Guck / John Farrar (USA) ranked at number 45 in the world pressed the leaders hard and took second place. The very consistent Backes/Voiron (FRA) team took third and their countrymen Revil/Guillemette took fifth place. The current Texel Race champions, Sven Karsenbarg/Mischa Heemskerk (NED) took fourth.

Standing after 2 races are:
1. BACKES / VOIRON FRA
2. BUNDOCK / FORBES AUS
3. STRANDBERG / MATTSON SWE
4. HAGARA / STEINACHER AUT
5. BOOTH / DERCKSEN NED
