The Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is the world's premier event for youth sailing. The regatta is one of the projects of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture. The Youth Worlds are organized by Turkish Sailing Federation with the support of GSGM (General Directorate of Youth and Sports), Spor-toto Organizations, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Beyoglu Municipality.
The Opening Ceremony will take place in Haskoy on the former Galata Bridge on 9 July. Halic will have a great significance for the ceremony of Mixing Waters. Leaving the message of love, peace and unity, this meaningful ceremony will come true in Istanbul's Antique Bay Halic by the pouring of the waters that are brought from each country by the participants.
The Championship will hold a festival of activities with music and entertainment at the event area next to the event village.
This Championship will be the most comprehensive sailing regatta organized in Turkey with a group of over 1250 people coming from abroad, 350 on the water and shore based employees, more than 60 official boats for race management, 100 volunteers and 25 international media teams, television production teams and overseas publicity all providing a showcase for the city of Istanbul.
While 'Volvo Ocean Race' is the title sponsor of the Championship, the Championship in Istanbul is supported by Opet, I-Marine, Dati Holding, Atakoy Marine as co-sponsor, Shop&Miles, Garanti Emeklilik as support sponsors and Yatch Turkiye, Power FM as media sponsors.
Besides being current owner of the Volvo Trophy, The Champions of 2009, France has been the kings of the competition from the beginning of the Championship, winning the Volvo trophy 10 times, France is the record holder with a total of 62 medals, including 20 gold, 27 silver and 15 bronze.
Istanbul welcomes the opportunity to showcase the city by organising a successful sailing event and demonstrating the city's ability to host more prestigious major events in the future.
