The first racing day brought very difficult conditions for the competitors, as Lady (Lake) Balaton exhibited its very capricious nature, mostly due to the mixing of the gradient wind and the unusually strong thermal effect.
From the 10.00 scheduled starting time to the 16.40 finishing time of the last fleet the breeze went a full 180 degrees from North to South, with large swings back and forth. Its strength also changed frequently from 5 knots to 10 knots, with lulls and puffs, making life for both the Race Committee and the sailors quite challenging.
At the end of the day three races were run for all fleets. Both classes are divided into two fleets with the 91 Laser Radials sailing red and green and the 138 Lasers in yellow and blue fleets.
Svenja Weger (GER) had a fantastic start in the Laser Radial fleet posting two seconds and claiming the bullet in race 2. She leads by six points from Georgina Povall (GBR) who won the opening race but followed up with two fifths. 2010 Byte CII World Champion Niki Blässer (FIN) lies in third.
In the Laser fleet Lorenzo Brando Chiavarini (GBR) sailed consistently all day finishing fourth twice and second once. He heads the leaderboard after day one but hot on his heels is 2011 ISAF Youth Worlds Champion Maxime Mazard (FRA) posting a tenth in race one before claiming the bullet in race two and finishing third in race three. Polands Tadesuz Kubiak lies third.
A high pressure system is moving over central Europe, so the weather outlook, at this stage, does not look that promising for Day 2. Fingers crossed.
