Split, Croatia was host for the 2013 European Laser Radial Youth Championship which came to a close this week with a total of nine races and one discard under its belt.
An exciting event, albeit the wind swings from the west to the northern Bura winds. Not an easy job for the Race Committee to handle.
Races got off mid afternoon on most days, with an average wind speed of about 8 to 10 knots, making it a light wind event.
On the last day that all changed as the long awaited Mistral from the west kicked in with about 12 to 15 knots, wrapping up the event in style.
On 30 June, nearly 300 competitors performed a unique sail by in front of the city with the official brass band playing to their movements, all to celebrate the entry of Croatia into the European Union on 1 July. A moving moment that hoisted sailing to Croatian national history.
In the boys fleet Joel Rodriguez dominated the fleet with four bullets in his overall score but lost the lead in the last race when Filip Ciszkiewicz was able to discard an 18th place to grab the title on 30 points.
It was a real nail biter for the Radial girls on the podium. First and second were tied on points, as were third and fourth. Dewi Couvert took the Crown and was proclaimed the 2013 European Radial Youth Girl Champion with Flem Hast Line in second and Vasileia Karachaliou in third. Mikkola Monika in fourth.
