Tornados Racing Yesterday

Tornado World Championship and Olympic Qualification Regatta
Marthas Vineyard

No rain, clear skies, and a 13-18 knot north-easterly breeze greeted competitors an the second full day of the Championship.
The fleet was greeted at the starting line by an armada of photo/video boats, helicopters taking aerial photos, planes taking aerial photos (and laying smoke contrails at the start of the first race), and spectator boats and planes. The Vineyard had discovered that Tornado racing on a clear, breezy day is the best show of the summer.

The fleet jumped at the great racing conditions. a bit to fast on the first try, resulting in a general recall. On the next try, the fleet leapt off the starting line and put on a great display of the speed and power of Tornados motoring upwind through a chop. This boat remains untouchable upwind. Indeed, the new double trapeze rig has opened up new levels of performance. Needless to say, the downwind performance of the Tornado is even more stunning.

In Race 3, the 2000 Olympic Silver Medallists, Darren Bundock/John Forbes (AUS) jumped out early on the first leg and never looked back. They set a blistering pace around the course, winning Race 3 with ease. The Russian team of Kirilyuk/Ushkov finshed second; European Champions Backes/Voiron (FRA) continued to be consistent at the top, and finished third; fourth place went to Strandberg/Mattson; and fifth to Santiago Lange/Carlos Espinola of Argentina.

Race 4 gave Bundock/Forbes the opportunity to take early control of the Championship. They repeated their dominant performance of Race 3 and won the Race handily. Backes/Voiron kept up their pace and kept the pressure on the leaders by taking second place. Mitch Booth / Herbert Dercksen grabbed third; fourth went to Gold Medallists, Roman Hagara/Hans-Peter Steinacher; and fifth to Dutch sailors Sven Karsenbarg/Mischa Heemskerk.
