The 2012 ISAF Training Scholarship at the Rockley International Academy venue in Poole, UK has now been underway for six weeks and all seven candidates are nearing the end of their training.
Candidates have recently been enjoying a variety of activities including sailing with Laser Performance in Weymouth and Portland, Great Britain, host venue of the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition.
LaserPerformance has been a long-time partner of the ISAF Connect to Sailing initiative and this year's seven candidates spent some time exploring the LaserPerformance products and were able to gain a hands-on understanding of the entire LaserPerformance range for themselves.
The candidates experienced an action-packed, windy afternoon at SailLaser Weymouth in the Laser Bahia. Ahmed Samir Mohamed from Egypt commented, "We tried the Bahia, which was nice and stable in the windy and wavy conditions, I really enjoyed sailing it. The Bahia would be a very good training boat in Egypt with its large crew capacity and robust construction. Participation is key and the Bahia will allow us to achieve that."
Brice Jacobsen, President of the Madagascar Yachting and Rowing Squadron, added, "The training has been great and today I learnt about the Laser and I can now take my newly found knowledge to share with the rest of my team."
As a show of LP's continued support to the Connect to Sail programme and trainees, each member of the initiative was given one of the Laser sails used at the 2012 Olympic Sailing Regatta as a permanent reminder of their time in the UK. Using their new sails, the trainees took part in a short relay race within the harbour, putting boat handling skills to the test in the fresh autumn breeze.
European Vice-President of LaserPerformance James Lund-Lack commented, "The Olympic sails are a fantastic piece of memorabilia, not only will it help the ISAF candidates inspire sailors back in their own countries but it also continues the London 2012 goal to inspire a generation and leave a legacy.
"The enthusiasm shown by the candidates for the ISAF Training Scholarship, Sailing and the Olympic sails was fantastic - it's good to know that the sails have gone to good homes.
"LaserPerformance wish all seven ISAF Training Scholarship Candidates the best of luck in their training and hope to see them leading the development of sailing in their regions very soon."
