Over the past three years Chennai Sailing Academy has thrilled adventure lovers and sailing enthusiasts in the country by hosting the India International Regatta.
And this year will be no different as from 16-22 October the fourth edition of the regatta will feature the Optimist and 29er fleets as well as a new addition of the Laser 4.7. Over 90 of the best young sailors in India will flock to Chennai for four days of racing.
The aim of the India International Regatta is to provide a vibrant platform for the youth to excel in sailing and project Chennai as a global destination for future sailing events considering the fact that the Tamil Nadu government is planning to oversee the creation of the first boating marina facility on the East Coast of India.
There is the added excitement that the waters off the coast at Chennai are challenging and present an ideal threshing ground for a Regatta of repute and that with the third week of October the lusty monsoon winds will prevail over the racing area creating challenging conditions for all participants of all classes. It is our fond hope that sailors will thrill to the venue and the event and make it one of the most successful sporting events in the history of the sport in Tamil Nadu.
Regatta organisers will be buoyed by the recent acquisition of a 10 year sponsorship with Raymond Ltd which will establish the regatta in the city.
Commenting on the deal, Mr. Ashok Thakkar, Commodore of Chennai Sailing Academy, said, "With this ten-year contract, we will be able to plan for the future. We also have a group of other sponsors on differing levels of sponsorship for differing return on investment benefits. They can count on the on-going quality of our event and make their long range plans accordingly."
Mrinmoy Mukherjee, Director - Marketing & Business Development, Retail, Raymond Ltd added, "Raymond is delighted to extend its partnership with the India International Regatta until 2021, taking on from its successful association last year. The enthusiasm of the young sailors and the interest of the audience and the global sailing community in this event is truly encouraging. As a sport that enhances focus, fitness and a spirit of adventure, we believe that sailing is a special sport for the Indian youth. Raymond's partnership with this event over the long-term is a testimony to our commitment to this sport and the Indian International Regatta."
