The second mark saw the first three positions remain the same but the Italians Francesco BRUNI and Guido Anta VIGNA captured fourth position and the 2002 Word Champions Iain PERCY and Steve MITCHELL rounded in fifth place. The wind shifted between 140° and 135° and increased slightly to a steady 10 knots, perfect for these classic boats.
At the third mark Domingos/Santos and Grael/Ferreira held their positions while Percy/Mitchell crept in to round in third position. Rohart/Rambeau rounded in fourth and the French team of Philippe PRESTI and Jean-Phillipe SALIOU improved their position to fifth. Presti/ Saliou that rounded the first mark in 15 position and ended the race at sixth place. The Irish team of Maurice O'CONNELL and Ed PEEL also had a good race, rounding the first mark in 21 and finishing in twelfth.
It was a very exciting finish for this important fifth race, where the strong Portuguese Team lead the entire race in first place, but were passed on the last leg by the experienced Iain PERCY and Steve MITCHELL (GBR) who took line honors.
Xavier ROHART and Pascal RAMBEAU (FRA) finished in second, and this position gives them a good chance to become the 2005 World Champions. There is lots of excitement in this championship, the races are well run, sailing conditions are great every day, and the finish cocktail hour is well supplied!
