Vendée Globe
Les Sables d'Olonnes

It was at 22 hours 49 minutes and 55 seconds GMT on Wednesday 2 February 2005 that the 60 foot monohull PRB skippered by Vincent RIOU crossed the finish line of the Vendée Globe 2004, the single-handed round the world race, without stopovers and without assistance at the start of Les Sables d'Olonne (France).
The race time, after covering the 23,680 miles, is 87 days 10 hours 47 minutes and 55 seconds at an average theoretical speed along the course of 11,28 knots (22 km/hr).

He thus succeeds Michel DESJOYEAUX (PRB) who won the 2000/01 version of the race, having covered the 40,000 kilometres of the course in 93 days 03 hours 57 minutes and 32 seconds. Vincent thus beats the previous record by 5 days 17 hours 9 minutes and 37 seconds.

At 05 hours 22 minutes and 08 seconds GMT, today 3 February 2005 the yellow Open 60 footer Bonduelle skippered by Jean LE CAM crossed the finish line to take second place, 06 hours 32 minutes and 13 seconds behind the winner, Vincent RIOIU on PRB. Jean made a fast finish on the same tack for seven hours heading for the finish at an average of 12.4 knots.

His time for the 23 680 miles course is 87 days 17 hours 20 minutes and 08 seconds at an average speed for the theoretical course of 11.24 knots (20,81 km/h).

For Mike GOLDING (Ecover) it is now just a case of counting down the miles and the minutes until he gets in. Always further south than the leading trio, Mike has been playing catch up for a long time, although he did make a good recovery, he could never quite get the opportunity to make the final few miles that counted.

At 08:00GMT this morning, Mike GOLDING (Ecover) was 93 miles from the finish line and is expected in Les Sables d'Olonne later today, at approximately 19:00 this evening.
