Sail Auckland
Auckland, New Zealand

The final day of Sail Auckland 2005 was sailed in conditions much like day one. Light, shifty breezes averaging six knots and slight seas - pleasant sailing conditions despite the wind changing direction for each race. For some classes the outcome of the last race was critical to decide who would top the podium.
The Laser and Laser Radial fleets both competed twelve races over the four day regatta. In the 24 boat Laser Radial fleet, competition was fierce with the women's positions at the top shifting day by day. It all came down to the last race with Sarah MACKY and Sara WINTHER both from New Zealand tied on 37 points. In the end it was the countrie's 2004 Olympic representative in the Europe class who outshone her rival by taking the bullet in the final race to secure her position. Winther finished third to end the regatta in third place overall. First place went to Mark ORAMS (NZL) who posted an impressive string of first place finishes over the four days.

28 sailors representing five nations competed in the Laser fleet but it was 20 year old Michael BULLOT (NZL) who eventually took the top spot. The 2001 Laser Radial World champion saw off some serious competition to finish the series on 29 points and five bullets, three of which he collected on the final day of racing. In second place was Andrew MURDOCH (NZL) who narrowly missed out in representing his nation in Athens last summer. Murdoch's OCS in race three forced him to count a 14 from race one, a score at odds with the rest of his results which consisted of three firsts, five seconds, one third and a seventh.

Only three boats competed in the 49er fleet and it was Jake BARTROM and Craig PRENTICE (NZL) who took the title after posting seven firsts of the eight races sailed. There were also only three boats in the 470 fleet which sailed eleven races. Derek SCOTT and Dave HEALY (NZL) dominated proceedings, posting eight firsts, two seconds and discarding an OCS.
