Mads Ebler has won the Slovenia match race cup after taking victory against Viktor Ogeman's crew VEJA in an all-scandinavian final. This is Ebler's second consecutive triumph in SMRC, but unlike last year, this time he took the trophy without losing a single match.
Eight teams representing five nations took part at Slovenia match race cup, an ISAF Grade 2 event held in Izola. Despite the postponement flag hanging on the pole every morning, organizers managed to complete the whole program. Mistral in fact showed up almost regularly at noon and lasted until late evening hours allowing competitors to sail whole round robin, quarterfinals, semis and grand finale.
The first two skippers to leave the scene were Szymon Syzmik (POL) and Felix Oehme (GER), scoring 0 and 2 points in the round robin, while Ebler and Ogeman advanced directly to semis with 7 and 5 wins out of seven contests. The rest of the crews had to fight for the remaining two quarter final places.
At this stage Vesna Dekleva Paoli faced Rafal Sawicki and Dejan Presen challenged Gorazd Rajar. It was a best of three series, which concluded with 2:1 in favour of Sawicki and Presen. Since the wind was still persistent, sail off matches for fifth place ended the day. Dekleva Paoli took advantage in both pre-starts, dominated each leg of the racecourse and finally grasped a 2:0 victory.
The semi finals got underway on Sunday with a steady 8-knot breeze from the north west. Ebler picked Rafal Sawicki as his opponent leaving Presen to face Ogeman. Ogeman dealt with the Slovenian stunningly well taking control from the outset, ultimately moving forward to the final. Ebler and Sawicki, on the other hand, had some interesting lead changes. Sawicki took advantage in pre-starts multiple times but Ebler always caught up in the second upwind and passed the finishing line ahead of his rival.
After the defeat Sawicki met Presen in Petit Final, however, all eyes were set on Ebler and Ogeman final duel. The Nordic couple had some fierce pre-starts and close tacking moments, but Ogeman's threats didn't last long. The defending champion was simply unbeatable, "The goal was clear from the beginning, we wanted to win. I don't think the competitors were bad at all. Actually, we had a few close races which could have gone either way. It is nice to win all the matches but the other teams did also very well,"
said Ebler after conquering his second SMRC title.
