2005 Bacardi Cup
Coral Reef Yacht Club, USA

Three former Bacardi Cup champions seven-time winner Mark REYNOLDS of California, two-time Cup winner Peter BROMBY of Bermuda, and 2004 defending champion Afonso DOMINGOS of Portugal are among the early registrants for the 2005 Bacardi Cup.
Competitors from Italy, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, the Bahamas and the United States have also signed on early.

The six-race Bacardi Cup Star Class Regatta, among the most respected regattas in the world, runs from Sunday 6 to Friday 11 March in Biscayne Bay. It is co-hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club and the U.S. Sailing Center, both based in Coconut Grove, and is sponsored l by Bacardi USA., Inc

The Bacardi Cup originated in Havana, Cuba in 1927 and the tradition flourished until the political unrest in 1957 forced Bacardi to leave Cuba, subsequently taking the spirits company's sailing competition out of the country as well.

In 1962, the Regatta found a new home in Miami at the Coral Reef Yacht Club, where it has continued to sail ever since as one of the few regattas in the world where seasoned amateurs can test their sailing skills against Olympians and Star Class World Champions. The Bacardi Cup remains the only Cuban-born sporting event to survive in the U.S.

'There is no race quite like the Bacardi Cup which attracts the best Star Class competitors in the world,' said Jose Argamasilla BACARDI, great grandson of the Bacardi founder. 'We are proud to sponsor this week-long event, which embodies class, sportsmanship and the spirit of racing.'

All participants in the Bacardi Cup compete aboard 22-foot Olympic-class Star sloops. Race teams comprise two members: a skipper and crew. Participants sail one race per day from Sunday through Friday on a 10.5-mile course in Biscayne Bay. The six daily races of the Cup will each proclaim a winner, with the overall top winning team demonstrating the best performance in five of these six races.
