Seven times Laser World Champion and triple Olympic medallist Robert SCHEIDT took advantage of his knowledge of Ilhabela and won 'Peter Blake Around the Island Regatta', the third race of the Ilhabela Sailing Week, Brazil's biggest sailing event.
Scheidt was tactician onboard
Odoyá, a Beneteau First 40.7, the fastest on handicap of the IMS class. Argentinean Navy vessel
Fortuna III, with Brazilian Olympic Medalist Lars GRAEL as tactician, took finish line honors after 5 hours, 47 minutes, 31 seconds.
Event leaders Jorge ZARIF (
Aries IV skipper), who is first in the overall rankings, and Eduardo SOUZA RAMOS (
Mitsubishi/Daslu skipper), third overall, were surprised by windless areas.
'Everyone is really close. Today (Thursday) we faced two huge windless areas and all the boats finished close to each other', SOUZA RAMOS said.
'It was a tactic regatta that put everyone really close to each other', Lars GRAEL said.
ABN Amro II crew that will race in the Volvo Ocean Race are sailing
ABN Amro/Neptunus Express. They were the fourth boat to get to the finish line, but finished 13 after handicap. The crew is using Ilhabela Sailing Week as preparation for the Round The World Race. Brazilians Lucas BRUN and André MIRSKY are used to sail the Neptunus Express. In 2004, Mirsky was helmsman and Brun was part of the crew of the boat, that also sailed in Ilhabela.
Peter Blake Around the Island Regatta is a tribute to sailing legend Peter Blake New Zealand, who was anchored in Ilhabela Yacht Club during the first edition of the race.
