ISAF Centenary - 1907-2007

2007 marks the centenary year of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), the world governing body for the sport of sailing. ISAF is celebrating it's birthday by celebrating sailing. The year 2007 will be marked by events, both small and large, global and local, for sailors and for people new to the sport.

The ISAF Centenary will be celebrated under the theme Sail The World. The nature of the centenary events that will run throughout 2007 will encapsulate all elements and levels of the sport from professional races featuring the stars of the sport through to grass roots sailing.

Above all the events will set out to communicate the spirit of the sport worldwide and, in the process, educate and inspire more people to participate in and enjoy sailing.

ISAF President Göran PETERSSON commented, 'The ISAF Centenary provides not only a platform to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of ISAF, but offers a unique opportunity to globally promote the sport. ISAF is looking forward to working with the ISAF MNA's and Classes, and through them involving clubs, event organizers and many other sailing initiatives around the world to broaden and share the sport with many more people and maximise this opportunity.'

Sail The World
A pinnacle celebration will be the Sail The World weekend - two day's when ISAF invites the world of sailing to be out on the water around the globe. The target is to have a global weekend of sailing activities aimed at all disciplines and levels - in effect, a global festival of sailing. Whether a Member National Authority, club, class, event organizer, community sailing project, recreational sailor, racer or newcomer - Sail The World will give the sailing community the opportunity to be part of a global festival across all continents.

The Sail The World event will take place from 1-2 September 2007 with sailing events taking place in every corner of the world. ISAF will be coordinating with Member National Authorities and Classes to help encourage, develop and promote events ranging in size, scale and composition. The aim is to celebrate sailing - to bring sailing to the world, to those who are already passionate about the sport and to those for whom sailing is unknown territory.

Sailor of the Century
On 1 September 2007, ISAF will be hosting a unique Sailor of the Century Awards, recognizing 100 years of achievement across all disciplines of the sport, which will be preceded during the day with a celebration of sail.

100 Years of Sailing
ISAF will publish a commemorative book - 100 Years of Sailing. The book will present a record of international development, paralleling the growth of the sport globally with the progressive development of sailing.

It will follow the development classes and the one-designs, and cover the sport from small dinghies to offshore racers. It will examine the leading personalities of the sport and show how many of them have contributed to and influenced the evolution of the sport. Above all, the book will be a record of the sport during a period of development, one that is matched by sailors' enjoyment.

Alongside ISAF events in 2007, such as the 2007 ISAF World Sailing Championship, Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, ISAF Team Racing World Championship and ISAF Match Racing World Championships, ISAF will embrace Graded events, Class World Championships, Continental Events and many other sailing events across Europe, Australia, the America's, Asia and Oceania within the Sail The World collaboration. ISAF would like the world of sailing to join ISAF in sharing and utilizing the ISAF Centenary and Sail The World as a global platform to promote the sport.

2007 - Sailing's Year
Sailing is already a vast sport which extends into every corner of the globe. In 2007 ISAF aims to broaden this reach, to present sailing to not just every corner of the world, but the whole world.

Sail The World Programme
The ISAF Centenary Programme will be circulated to ISAF Member National Authorities and Classes and published on the ISAF Sail The World Centenary website in September 2005.
