Race Officials Set To Ensure A Fair Fight In Bermuda

Virtual Spectator ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship 2005
Hamilton, Bermuda

An ISAF International Umpire Team of 15 officials will ensure a fair playing field when racing at the Virtual Spectator ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship in Hamilton, Bermuda gets underway on Saturday. With a long and distinguished track record, Chairman of the ISAF Match Racing Committee Henry MENIN (ISV) will act as Chief Umpire to ensure everything on the water runs smoothy.

As well as being Chairman of the ISAF Match Racing Committee, Henry is a member of the ISAF International Umpires Sub-Committee and has been an ISAF International Judge (IJ) since 1992 and an ISAF International Umpire (IU) since 1995. During a distinguished career as a race official, Henry has officiated at numerous top events including the Louis Vuitton Cup and America's Cup in New Zealand, and numerous ISAF Grade 1 events across the World including the Swedish Match Cup, the Trofeo Challenge Roberto Trombini in Italy, the Steinlager Cup in New Zealand and the Congressional Cup in the USA. He was an member of the International Umpire Team at the 2004 ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship in Annapolis, USA and this year was the Chief Umpire at the ISAF Grade 1 PTPortugal Match Cup.

Henry will be joined by twelve other IUs and two National Umpires (NU) to form the International Umpire Team at this year's Championship.

Robert DUFFY (BER) - An IJ since 1999 and an IU since 2002, Robert has officiated at top events across North America, including the ISAF Grade W Laser World Championship and Mumm 30 World Championship and on the match racing scene, the ISAF Grade 1 Congressional Cup in the USA and on his home waters, the ISAF Grade 1 Bermuda Gold Cup.

Robin JUDAH (BER) - Robin has held IJ status for over 20 years and been and IU for almost 15. He has plenty of experience officiating on his home waters, having been a regular member of International Umpire Teams at the ISAF Grade 1 Bermuda Gold Cup sailed out of Hamilton Habour. He also has plenty of experience of women's match racing having officiated several times at the ISAF Grade 1 Santa Maria Cup in the USA.

Dick KEMPE (BER) - Dick is another member of the International Umpire Team with vast experience. A former member of the ISAF Racing Rules Committee and a member of the International Jury at the 2003 ISAF World Sailing Championship in Cadiz, Spain, Dick has held both IJ and IU status for well over ten years. A regular official at ISAF Grade 1 events he has made numerous appearances on the International Umpire Teams at the ISAF Grade 1 Bermuda Gold Cup and the ISAF Grade 1 Congressional Cup in the USA, and in the women's match racing scene, the ISAF Grade 1 Santa Maria Cup in the USA.

Soren KRAUSE (DEN) - Soren has held both IJ and IU status since 1990 and is also an IU instructor and performance assessor. Since then he has officiated at top events across the World including the Louis Vuitton Cup in New Zealand, the 2002 ISAF Match Racing World Championship in Sweden, the 2002 ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship in Spain and numerous ISAF Grade 1 events including the Danish Open, Bermuda Gold Cup, ACI Cup in Croatia and the Swedish Match Cup.

Tina ORTENDAHL (SWE) - A member of the 32nd America's Cup Umpire Group, Tina has vast experience officiating on the match racing circuit. She has been an IU since 1996 and an IJ since 1998 and been a member of International Umpire Teams across the world at major ISAF Graded events like the Nippon Cup in Japan, the St. Mortiz Match Race in Switzerland, the Swedish Match Cup, the Magic White Knights in Russia and the ACI Cup in Croatia as well as at the 2001 ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship in Italy.

Anders OTTO (SWE) - Anders became an IU in 1995 and an IJ three years later. Amongst an impressive résumé, he was a member of the International Umpire Team at the 2000 ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship in the USA and as well as being a member of the International Jury at numerous class World Championships, has also officiated at the ISAF Grade 1 Swedish Match Cup and ISAF Grade 1 events in both Australia and New Zealand.

David PELLING (CAN) - An IJ and IU since 1995, David was also a member of the International Umpire Team at the 2000 ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship in the USA. He is familiar with Bermudan waters after having officiated at the ISAF Grade 1 Bermuda Gold Cup and was also an official at the Louis Vuitton Cup in New Zealand.

Bo SAMUELSSON (SWE) - A member of the ISAF Racing Rules Committee, Bo has been an IJ for 20 years and an IU for 15. He is a member of the 32nd America's Cup Umpire Group and also a part of the ISAF Jury for the Volvo Ocean Race. Amongst the long list of achievements, Bo has been an official at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Sailing Competition, the Louis Vuttion Cup in New Zealand, the 2002 ISAF Match Racing World Championship in Sweden and numerous ISAF Grade 1 events, in several of which he has acted as Chief Umpire.

Debbi SCHOENHERR (USA) - Approved as an IU in 2004, Debbi was a member of the International Umpire Team at last year's ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship in the USA. She has also acted as an official at a number of ISAF Grade 1 evens including the Congressional Cup, Santa Maria Cup and Osprey Cup in the USA.

Peter SHRUBB (BER) - Selected for the 32nd America's Cup Umpire Group, Peter is one of four Bermudan IUs who will be officiating on their home waters. He has been an IU since 2001 and has vast experience on his home waters, being a regular presence at the ISAF Grade 1 Bermuda Gold Cup.

Andy WARDLE (CAN) - Since becoming an IJ in 1995 and an IU two years later, Andy has been a presence amongst International Umpire Teams at some of the World's top events including the ISAF Grade 1 Semaine Olympique Française and Miami OCR and several class World Championships.

Stephen WRIGLEY (USA) - Stephen became an IU and IJ last year, but already has experience officiating at World and National titles, as well as the ISAF Grade 1 Congressional Cup in the USA. He also a member of the International Umpire Team at last year's ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship in the USA.

Two NUs, Craig DAVIS (BER) and Matthew CAIRNEY (CAN) complete the International Umpire Team. Craig and Matthew are both IOD sailors, with Matthew finishing fourth at the IOD Worlds last year crewing for Somers KEMP (BER). The Championship in Hamilton will provide both with a fantastic learning experience to help further develop their umpiring skills.

The Opening Ceremnoy gets the Championship underway on Friday, with the first races on Saturday. The final will decide the 2005 Virtual Spectator ISAF Women's Match Racing World Champion on Tuesday.
