Giulia CONTI (ITA) and Anna TUNNICLIFFE (USA) will contest the final of the ISAF Grade 1 Rolex Osprey Cup in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA after they triumphed over pre-event favourites Claire LEROY (FRA) and Malin MILLBOURN (SWE) in yesterday's semi finals.
Number one in the ISAF World Match Race Rankings and nominee for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year LEROY
had cruised through the round robin, winning her remaining two matches yesterday against 2003 ISAF Women's Match Racing World Champion MILLBOURN
to finish with a perfect 9-0 record. The young Italian CONTI
was also in impressive form, defeating Elizabeth KRATZIG
(USA) and Sandy HAYES
(USA) to finish in second whilst MILLBOURN
came in a comfortable third.
With the wind dropping to cut short racing on the opening two days the scheduled double round robin was changed to a single one, leaving one more semi final place up for grabs. In a tight battle between TUNNICLIFFE and KRATZIG, the young Laser Radial sailor TUNNICLIFFE's victory in their round robin match yesterday was to prove the deciding factor.
In the semi final matches youth proved it's worth over experience with CONTI and TUNNICLIFFE winning their place in today's final with 3-1 scorelines against MILLBOURN and LEROY respectively.
