Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge 2005
Port Mahon, Spain

The King's Cup of classic boats has begun in Port Mahon, Spain, part of the program of the exclusive circuit Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. The conditions of the first day were perfect, with sun and wind from 10 to 15 knots from southeast, that gave back an interesting regatta of debut, a long coastal route eastern of Minorca with the turn of the small Isla of the Aire, for a total of 15 nautical miles.
The first boat to complete the route - in little more of 2 hours - was the flagship of the fleet, the Mariquita, a project of William FIFE of 1911 army from the Monaco based owner James THOM. The same boat also has awarded the listing in corrected time in its class 'Vintage' with gaff rig (the most ancient), in front to Altair, sloop of 1931 of Donald LESSELS and to Veronique, gaff yawl of 1907 of the Belgian Hans Albrecht.

In the class of the 'Vintage' with 'Marconi' most modern rig, the victory in real and corrected time went to the spectacular Mercury, 1938, 16 meters sloop of American origins, today owned by Jordi CABAU of Majorca. Second was Madrigal, other sloop of 15 meters of 1938 owned by John ASHLEY (GBR) with the flag of the prestigious Royal Club Yacht Thames of London; and third place went to Thalatta of Rafael SORRATOSA (ESP).

In the biggest class, the 'Classic Boats' (hulls built between 1950 and 1975 with construction not in plastic), it was a good day for the Italian boats. The victory went to Strale, an original project Belardi of 1967 for the ravennate Antonio BANDINI. It is a sloop of 13 meters with original lines, to light displacement and tight hull, with performance of a younger boat. In second place was the 17metre Yanira of 1954 owned by Federico PLANAS (ESP). In the third place was another Italian yacht, the very attractive, Windigo a 22metre sloop owned by Andrea BOROLI with the flag of the Yacht Club Italiano.

There is also a full and intriguing program of social events from the sponsor Officine Panerai: on the panoramic terrace of the Nautical Club Mahon, with a great view of the bay, every afternoon cocktail and music for all of the sailors. There is plenty of action also on board Adria, a vintage boat itself, 25 meters in slength, that works how Panerai Lounge for hosts and journalists until evening. The walk on the paths of Port Mahon is not to lose for many people every day.

Racing continues today and tormorrow.
