Schenker 49er European Championship 2005
Vallensbæk, Denmark

After a dramatic final day in Vallensbæk, Denmark number one team in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings Chris DRAPER and Simon HISCOCKS (GBR) successfully defended their title at the ISAF Grade C1 Schenker 49er European Championship. In a series of grand final races the British Olympic bronze medallists came out on top ahead of America's Morgan LARSON and Pete SPAULDING and home favourites Peter and Søren HANSEN (DEN).
The British pair keep up their remarkable record in the Europeans and have now finished in the top two in all of the last four Championships.

Two races scheduled for the final series took place before the top ten went into the grand finals. Here the top competitors graduated to a series of race offs. In the initial races the losing teams were eliminated, and then when the fleet had shrunk the winner was decided by the number of race wins.

The grand final lineup oozed quality with the three Olympic medallists from Athens lining up along with all the winners of this year's ISAF Grade 1 events

The early races saw Olympic silver medallists Rodion LUKA and George LEONCHUK (UKR) struggle, whilst the final series and qualifying series winners Stevie MORRISON and Ben RHODES (GBR) and Pietro SIBELLO and Gianfranco SIBELLO (ITA) also fell by the wayside early on. The remaining six teams included DRAPER and HISCOCKS, Olympic Champions Iker MARTINEZ and Xabier FERNANDEZ (ESP), ISAF Grade 1 Semaine Olympique Française winners Jan Peter PECKOLT and Hannes PECKOLT (GER), ISAF Grade 1 Rolex Miami OCR winners LARSON and SPAULDING and two Danish teams, HANSEN and HANSEN and Allan NØRREGAARD and Jonatan PERSSON.

The British pair were able to produce the form that has kept that at the top of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings for well over a year and took the gold medal. Meanwhile LARSON and SPAULDING sailed terrifically to take second place in only their second ISAF Graded event in the 49er since the ISAF Worlds in 2003 and HANSEN and HANSEN scored by far their best European result to date with the bronze medal.

In the 29er European Championship being held simultaneously in Vallensbæk, Ed CHAPMAN and Tom PEEL (GBR) finished as clear winners, taking the title with two races to spare. The battle for silver was far closer with Denmark's Helle Ørum NIELSEN and Simon Karstoft JENSEN just holding on in the last race to beat Dylan FLETCHER and Nick HOLLIS (GBR) by a single point.
