Internationaux de France de Match Racing 2005
Pornichet, France

Ian WILLIAMS has lifted the Manu Minard Trophy as winner of the ISAF Grade 1 Internationaux de France de Match Racing in Pornichet, France. A three-nil win in yesterday's final gave WILLIAMS his second victory of the year.
A northwest wind of six to eight knots yesterday allowed all the scheduled races to take place.

The petit final saw round robin winner Matteo SIMONCELLI (ITA) take on last year's runner up Sebastien COL (FRA). COL seized the initiative with an excellent start in race one and never gave the Italian a look in for the rest of the race. He repeated the feat in the second race to secure third place and give the home fans something to celebrate.

WILLIAMS and Eugeniy NEUGODNIKOV (RUS), numbers nine and twelve in the ISAF World Match Race Rankings, lined up for the final, with both sailors competing for what would be one of the most significant victories of their careers.

Following COL's example, WILLIAMS got off to a flier in race one and resisted his Russian opponent for the remainder of the race to go one up in their best of five match. The second match was tighter but again WILLIAMS held the advantage from the start and eventually came out on top. Holding a two-nil lead WILLIAMS went into match three just one race away from his first victory in an ISAF Grade 1 event. NEUGODNIKOV could do nothing to stop the Brit and WILLIAMS claimed the match to take a three-nil victory and the Manu Minard Trophy.
