Three Boats Gain On HUNGER and JESS

In the seventh and eighth races of the the CSC 505 Worlds in Warnemünde, the leaders Wolfgang HUNGER and Holger JESS (GER) lost nine points of the 20 point lead they began the day with.

A 14 in race seven and tenth in race eight brings HUNGER and JESS' points total to 20 and just eleven points separate them from the second placed team.

In a puffy fresh to strong Southwesterly, Mike MARTIN and Jesse FALSONE (USA) jumped from ninth to second on the overall leaderboard with a first and a third place yesterday. Dietrich SCHEDER-BIESCHIN and Rainer GÖRGE (GER) displayed the most consistent performance throughout the wind range. With two fifth places yesterday, they moved up to third overall from fifth.

Big gains were also made yesterday by Christian KELLNER and Klaus STAMMERJOHANN (GER) who finished 21 and second. The pair now discard the 50 they scored in race five and the 39 from race one bringing them shooting up the leaderboard to sixth overall. There will be plenty more action to look forward to from this chasing pack with just six points separating fifth to ninth overall.

In the second race of the day, the wind increased to about 28 knots. 138 of 175 competitors finished the 10,5 mile long race within the 30 minute time limit after the first boat. Two more boats came in a little later after recovering from capsizes. This indicates the high standard even of the back fleet. The average speed around the course was 7,5 knots.

More strong breezes are forecast for Friday. Since HUNGER and JESS had boat speed difficulties in these conditions yesterday, the three boats behind them still have a chance to win the championship in the ninth and final race. Due to finishing tenth in race no. 8, HUNGER and JESS will be the pathfinder boat at the gate start tomorrow. This can be a disadvantage if the left side of the beat is favoured.
