Tornado European Championship 2005
Västervik, Sweden

Multiple World Champion Darren BUNDOCK and crew Aaron WORRALL (AUS) hold the lead in the ISAF Grade C1 Tornado European Championship after three races in Västervik, Sweden.
The pair, who won at the Tornado Europeans in Gran Canaria, Spain last year, had an inconspicuous start to the Championship yesterday with a 23rd place in the opening race. With race two abandoned they lay near the middle of the 60 strong fleet at the end of day one. However the recent Formula 18 World Championship winners came back strongly in races two and three today, with a fourth and a second place moving them to the top of the leaderboard on 29 points.

ISAF Grade 2 Travemünder Woche winners Andrey KIRILYUK and Valery USHKOV (RUS) are tied on points with BUNDOCK and WORRALL with finishes of 15, 8 and 6 in the opening trio of races. Two points back, Olympic silver medallists John LOVELL and Charlie OGLETREE (USA) complete the top three.

Olympic Champions Roman HAGARA and Hans Peter STEINACHER (AUT) got their Championship off to the perfect start with a bullet in race one but have since struggled with a 19th and a DNF putting them 29th overall. Conversely last year's top European team Mitch BOOTH and Herbert DERCKSEN (NED) suffered with an OCS in race one but have since finished fifth and scored a bullet to lift them up to 24th overall. Today's other bullet went to Roland GAEBLER and Gunnar STRUCKMANN (GER) who lie tenth overall.

Their were early problems for World Champions Fernando ECHAVARRI and Anton PAZ (ESP) after they fell to 29th in race one. However today the pair have found their form with a second and a third place lifting them to fourth overall, just five points behind BUNDOCK and WORRALL. After further three points back, France's winners of the ISAF Grade 1 Semaine Olympique Française Xavier REVIL and Christophe ESPAGNON complete the top five.

Ten races are scheduled for the Championship with one discard to come into consideration after race six. Racing began yesterday and continues through until Saturday with two races scheduled per day and a lay day on Thursday.
