Match Racing in Victoria is still a developing area of the sport, but this event is sure to attract the cream of talent, aged 19 years and under, from a number of Victorian clubs. The Victorian Youth Match Racing Championships are the selection event for the team/s to represent the State at the National Championships being held later in the month. The Victorian event is also open to interstate teams, although they will not be eligible for the championship trophy.
The Beneteau 2005 Australian Youth Match Racing Championships, conducted under the auspices of Yachting Australia, get underway at Sandringham Yacht Club on Friday September 16 and conclude on Monday the 19th.
This is the second year in a row that Victoria has hosted the event. New South Wales dominated the event last year, along with Western Australia, with the best Victorian team placing fifth. Sandringham Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, who hosted the Championships in 2004, are both developing young match racers with racing or training programs. Through their efforts, Victoria hopes to progressively move up the performance ladder.
Sandringham offers an outstanding venue for the Championships, with excellent marina and onshore facilities. The Club hosts the annual ISAF Grade 1 Sail Melbourne Olympic & Invited Classes Regatta, and has also been the venue for a range of World Championships. Excellent spectator viewing is available from the club balcony or breakwater, depending on wind conditions.
This event is proudly supported by Beneteau and Ronstan.
