Laser European Championship 2005
Cartagena, Spain

World and Olympic Champion Robert SCHEIDT (BRA) won the ISAF Grade C1 Laser European Championship yesterday in convincing fashion, taking a 15 point series win on the waters of Cartagena, Spain. In second place overall, Paul GOODISON (GBR) finished as top European to claim the title of 2005 European Champion, whilst Germany's Simon GROTELUSCHEN took the youth crown.
The European Laser Championship 2005 said goodbye to the waters of Cartagena offering a great show, both at sea and on land.

The first race on course one for the gold fleet began at 1438 hours local time yesterday with two general recalls and five black flags. The youth sailors eventually got away at 1507 after a general recall. The wind at that time was twelve knots with both races lasting around the 65 minute mark.

After a disappointing day on Thursday, Australia's Tom SLINGSBY took two first places. SLINGSBY gave his rivals no chance, not even SCHEIDT, who had to content himself with second place. Austria's Olympic silver medallist Andreas GERITZER also fought back from a disappointing performance on Thursday, to take third place. However after finishing eighth in the following race GERITZER failed to reach to podium, eventually finishing six points behind Mate ARAPOV (CRO).

In the second race the wind increased a little to 14-16 knots with another general recall for the gold fleet before the official start at 1641. The youth sailors got away without incident at 1635.

Croatia's Aron LOLIC crossed the line behind SLINGSBY, while Poland's Karol POROZYNISKI took a well deserved third ahead of SCHEIDT.

With the second discard coming into effect GOODISON won his battle with ARAPOV for the European title by eight points, with GERITZER as the third European.

In youth gold fleet a third and a fifth place where good enough to see Simon GROTELUSCHEN crowned Youth European Champion. Behind him France's Jonathan LOBERT scored a bullet an a third place to secure second overall, whilst Malte KAMRATH gave Germany two sailors on the podium.
