49er World Championship 2005
Moscow, Russia

The third racing day at the ISAF Grade W 49er World Championship on Lake Kliazminskoye in Moscow, Russia saw similar weather to day two. The conditions seemed to suit Jan and Hannes PECKOLT (GER) who scored three top two finishes to move into second place, eight points behind leaders Chris DRAPER and Simon HISCOCKS (GBR).
The majority of participating boats came to the starting line in tow yesterday, as the sailors spared themselves for the final four races of the qualifying series. European Champions DRAPER and HISCOCKS began the day with a six point lead at the top. After finishes of 5,3,8 in the first three races they added their fourth bullet of the Championship in the final race to extend their lead at the top. However, it was ISAF Grade 1 Semaine Olympique Française winners PECKOLT and PECKOLT who were the stars of the day, opening up with a bullet in race nine and following it with two second places. A discarded 19 in race twelve was their only blip, with the German's moving up two places from fourth yesterday morning, to second going into the final series tomorrow.

Behind the top two a gap to the rest of the fleet has opened up with third place Alexandre MONTEAU and Damien GUILLOU (FRA) 14 points behind the Germans. The French pair had another steady day with four top ten finishes putting them above Olympic silver medallists Rodion LUKA and George LEONCHUK (UKR) in fourth. It was a less successful day for Jonas WARRER and Martin KIRKETERP (DEN), who started race nine in second place overall, but two finishes of 17 in the last two races see them drop back to fifth.

Olympic Champions Iker MARTINEZ and Xabier FERNANDEZ (ESP) are gradually making up for a poor day one and scored another bullet yesterday which helps to lift them up to 14th overall.

Today there is no racing allowing the crews a lay day before the three day final series begins tomorrow.
