Hobie 16 Australian and Asia Pacific Championship
Melbourne, Australia

Tim SHUWALOW/Cameron HOOPER (AUS) today easily won the Hobie 16 Australian and Asia Pacific Championship conducted by Port Melbourne Yacht Club at Sail Melbourne.
The pair, Shuwalow from Sydney and Hooper, the Victorian local knowledge, led the 12 race one drop series from the first day. Despite late challenges from new Hobie 18 world champions, Brad SUMNER/Belinda WALKOM (AUS), who rushed home second overall and Darren SMITH/Natalie HILL (AUS), jumping up to third place after today's final races, the Shuwalow crew could not be caught.

Sumner leapt up the standings by winning Races 10 and 11 this afternoon, Smith did the same by winning the final race, and in doing so, pushed earlier contenders out of top three places.

Rob BRANCH/Barney HOAK (AUS)had to settle for fourth place, whilst Darren BUNDOCK/Alex GOLTZ'S pair of third places and a win in Race 9, gave them enough for fifth place, pushing the first international pair, Sebastien EYSSARTIER/Maxime CARDARELLY, who were sitting pretty for a podium place yesterday, down the board into sixth place.

The 45 Hobie competitors had better weather for the finish to their championships today, 10-20 knot winds and lots of sunshine.

Final provisional results:

1 T. Shuwalow/C. Hooper (AUS) 38 pts

2 B. Sumner/B. Walkom (AUS) 52

3 D. Smith/N. Hill (AUS) 54

4 R. Branch/B. Houk (AUS) 55

5. D. Bundock/A. Goltz (AUS) 60
