Tauranga, New Zealand

Yachting New Zealand's Young Sailor of the Year 2004 recipients have taken out the top places in the Nuplex 2005 Tauranga Cup National P Class Contest and the Nuplex 2005 Tanner Cup Contest. 94 junior sailors competed in the P Class competition in Tauranga.
The P-Class is often described as the "Cradle of Champions." Past winners in their youth include Russell COUTTS, Leslie EGNOT, Chris DICKSON, Dean BARKER and many others that have gone on to win major international yachting titles and Olympic medals.

Paul SNOW-HANSEN, Carl EVANS and Daniel WILCOX have all proven their sailing ability can be adapted from the Optimist to the P Class by standing out as the top performers so far at the 2005 P & Starling Nationals underway in Tauranga. All three top place getters in the Tauranga Cup were members of the New Zealand Optimist Team that won the 2004 World Championships

Yachting New Zealand National Coach Paul PAGE has been in Tauranga and is impressed with the quality of talent amongst our Junior Sailors. He sees huge paybacks from the team environment that the young sailors experienced in the Optimist Class lead by coach and mentor Hamish WILCOX last year.

"The standard of sailing amongst the top sailors is very good," says Page. "They sail consistently; they start well and then make the right decisions throughout the race. And they love it too - they all come in with huge smiles on their faces. The kids that have been in a team environment and who have travelled and competed together have really benefited from that. They grow as a group and look after each other with communication on and off the water."

Going into the final day of competition the Tanner Cup for 2005 was up for grabs amongst the top five boats with Paul SNOW-HANSEN and Carl EVANS finishing with 13 points each. Snow-Hansen came out on top having won four races in the nine race regatta while Evans won two.
