The host nation put in a fantastic performance to finish the sailing competition with ten gold, two silver and two bronze medals from the 17 sailing events. Singapore finished second in the medal table with four gold, six silver and three bronze medals. Malaysia also picked up two gold medals, whilst the final sailing gold was won by Indonesia’s I Gusti Made Oka SULAKSANA in the Mistral One Design Heavy Weight. The Philippines and Myanmar also picked up medals.

The racing, held out of Ocean Marina Yacht Club and Jomtien Beach, proved to be extremely tricky, and the small fleets meant that virtually all the events went right down to the wire. In the end it was the Thai team who came up trumps on the final day, winning a number of close battles with their Singaporean rivals to end top of the sailing medal table. As is so often the case, consistency proved key amongst the winners.

'The light winds here were very tricky and it was not easy to take every shift in wind direction, so we didn't take unnecessary risks,' said Justin LIU of Singapore, who won the Men’s 420 event with crew Sherman CHENG.

Amongst the 17 events were five in the Olympic Classes. Thailand’s Natthaphong PHONOPPHARAT scored victory in the RS:X, whilst Malaysia won in both the Laser and Laser Radial thanks to Mohd Romzi MUHAMAD and Nurul Elia ANUAR respectively. There was also double success for Singapore in the two 470 events, with Roy Junhao TAY and Peiming CHUNG taking the men’s title, whilst Dawn Xiaodan LIU and Elizabeth TAN won the women’s crown.
