The cheque was presented to Murray MITCHELHILL, President of Sailability Victoria in front of an enthusiastic crowd including young sailors from the Melbourne Stopover Sail Programme. Also present were Sailability members and 'wheelies' Colin JOHANSON and Martin WALLER.

Three organizations bid for the signed commemorative prints titled '60 Years of George Adams (Tattersall's) Cup and Melbourne Stopover for the Volvo Ocean Race'. They were:

  • ING Real Estate, developers of Waterfront City ($13,500)
  • Parks Victoria, partners in the Stopover ($10,000)
  • Volvo Commercial Vehicles Australia ($8,000)

Introducing People To The Joys Of Sailing

The aim of Sailability is to introduce people to the joys of sailing in an inexpensive and fun way in a supportive environment. Sailability programmes currently operate at 15 locations around Victoria and 50 across Australia. Most participants just enjoy the freedom and fun of recreational sailing, but there are also opportunities for the more competitive to develop their racing skills. The substantial donation will provide a much needed boost to the work of Sailability Victoria around the State. Sailability Victoria is a registered charitable organization.

The handover follows the successful staging of the Access Class 2006 Australian and International Championships, one of the highlights of the Melbourne Stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race which attracted 53 sailors from Sailability clubs and groups from most states and territories and overseas. The 39 race event was staged on Victoria Harbour from 27-29 January next to the Volvo Ocean Race Village and delivered some exciting, and tightly fought competition.
