Soling North American Championship 2006
Milwaukee, USA

An event that almost couldn't conclude, due to an unstable Sunday with storms, lightning and heavy rain, participants were lucky with a window of 30 minutes to 1 hour of 15 knot wind from the south and because of that the Race Committee were able to run one race before the time limit and thus achieving the minimum number of races required to validate the championship.
USA 807 with Joe HOEKSEMA, Matias COLLINS, Rose HOEKSEMA from Chicago Yacht Club and CNSI had a solid lead over USA 840 Jim MEDLEY, Marc HULBURT and Chris ROBERTS from Seattle while the wind was blowing, rounding the windward mark first and increasing their lead on the downwind leg. But once more as had haunted the four day event after 150 metres of rounding the mark, the wind dropped from 15 knots to zero for about 10 to 15 minutes.

On the left of the course MEDLEY, HULBERT and ROBERTS with Charlie KAMPS, Vytas KASNUINAS and Jon BAILEY (USA) were able to gain ground and find some breeze. KAMPS, KASNUINAS and BAILEY rounded first with MEDLEY second and HOEKSEMA, COLLINS and HOEKSEMA third with a good advantage, but again 150 metres after rounding the light air died once again.

MEDLEY chose the open sea whilst KAMPS and HOEKSEMA chose the left but no wind came and the boats at the back of the pack were able to close in on the front group. USA 845 Augi HERNANDEZ, Jorgen JOHNSSON, Martin JOHNSSON made big on the extreme left and sailing perfect in light conditions and made their way up to finish third behind KAMPS who was second and MEDLEY first. HOEKSEMA came in fifth after giving up one spot to local sailors Scott CONGER, Mike RODAER and Greg CONGER (USA).

This action and no throw outs gave the title to USA 845 Augi HERNANDEZ, Jorgen JOHNSSON, Martin JOHNSSON followed by USA 840 Jim MEDLEY, Marc HULBURT and Chris ROBERTS and in third local sailor and in duty organizing the event USA 832 Charlie KAMPS, Vytas KASNUINAS and Jon BAILEY.

The Red fleet had a well known winner, Steve BOBO, Emily GENSHEIMER and Dagmar VAN ENGEN (USA) followed by David BAUM, Margaret CHAVEZ and Kiara CALDWELL (USA) and third Scott EVANS, Johnnathan DELLINGER and Daniel MORRIS (USA).

This was the first time a NA championship had sailing in different boats five teams with a woman on board. A special thanks to them who are becoming Soling lovers and then better sailors. Or should that be the other way around?
