RNZYS Youth International Match Racing Championship 2006
Auckland, New Zealand

Day one of the ISAF Grade 3 RNZYS Youth International Match Racing Championships 2006 held on the Waitemata Harbour was off to an extremely slow start with the Elliott 6m Training Boats remaining tied to the dock until midday. The Race Committee out on the course, reported a light northerly was filling in and the boats left Westhaven Marina and racing began around 1300.
It was a gorgeous afternoon in the City of Sails with lots of full on match racing action, which kept the umpire team very busy!

A Black Flag disqualification was given to Evan WALKER (Cruising Yacht Club of Australia) who entered early, was clear astern and hit the other boat and then a luff that was judged too hard. This gave his opponent the RNZYS Pink girls team their second win for the day.

The breeze was a constant 10 - 14knot northerly and a total of seven flights were completed.

With the highest score of seven wins out of seven races Torvar MIRSKY from Fremantle Sailing Club was unbeatable on the water today, when asked about his day he replied;

'Consistent - I suppose.'Did you have fun out there today?'Yeah it was excellent racing and we had fun in the tide, this is the only place we sail in tide and it was a bit different.'

Who was your toughest race today?'Hamish ROUGHLEY from Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, he had a penalty and got ahead of us but tried to pull it off and it didn't work'.

Second on the points table with six wins - only losing today to MIRSKY (FSC) is David WOOD (Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Blue),

How did your day go David? 'Everything fitted together well and the crew work was good & we are happy! 'We didn't expect to be racing today, but it was great to get started! I was so nervous, my first race against Sam (Samantha OSBORNE ).'

Racing begins at 1000 tomorrow with flight 8.
